Not individuals, Relations: What Transparency is really about. A theory of algorithmic Governmentality

In this paper, I first define the nature of the relationship transparency maintains to the real through which transparency governs, and then in the second section I outline its specificities in terms of the highly symptomatic example of “algorithmic governmentality” (Rouvroy and Berns, 2013). On this backdrop, and with the help of Gilbert Simondon, in the third section I will draw on the work of Gilbert Simondon to argue that the new objects of transparency are relations, but only to the degree that these relations, by being objectified, become individual, mechanically repeatable statuses.
